Federal Committee

Statement of Purpose

The IAASE Federal Committee will monitor federal legislation, identify and inform the membership of current national laws and issues. The Committee will recommend action to be taken on behalf of IAASE and the individual Member.

Function and Tasks of the Federal Committee


  • The Federal Committee will identify, research and report to the Executive Board and on national and federal issues, law and pending legislation that are current in importance to the education of students and implementation by IAASE membership.

  • The Federal Committee will monitor activities of the Department of Education and other federal or national departments, agencies or organizations that have a role in the development of legislation, regulation, and policy statements which directly or indirectly impact programs and services for individuals with disabilities.

  • The Federal Committee will develop documents, position papers and testimony for public hearings or federal proceedings whereby the interests and the position of IAASE can be made known.

  • The Federal Committee will prepare information and materials which can be disseminated to the membership via varied methods including, the IAASE newsletter, website, and Executive Board documents.

  • The IAASE President will recommend the approval of the Federal Committee Chairperson(s) from a membership list of current Members.

  • Terms of the Federal Committee Chairperson(s) shall be for two (2) years and their appointment aligned with the term and recommendation of each new IAASE President. Chairperson(s) may be reappointed for successive two (2) year terms. Chairperson(s) who leave the position prior to the end of the two (2) years shall be replaced to fulfill the remaining portion of the two (2) year term.

  • The Federal Committee Chairperson(s) shall be a voting Member(s) of the IAASE Executive Board.

  • The Federal Committee Chairperson(s) will appoint Members in good standing to participate on the Committee. The Committee Chairperson(s) may add Members at any time and the term will be consistent with the term of each IAASE President.

  • The Federal Committee Members will consist of a minimum of five (5) Members.

  • The Federal Committee Members will be selected based on the diversity of the IAASE membership including, the IAASE regions, experience, gender and racial background.

  • The Federal Committee Members terms shall be for two (2) years and their appointment aligned with the term of each new IAASE President. The Federal Committee Members may be reappointed to successive two (2) year terms. The Committee Members who leave the position prior to the end of a two (2) year term shall be replaced to fulfill the remaining portion of the term.
